PROGRAM  DESCRIPTION

The ELICOS program is designed to accommodate a variety of student needs and standards from beginner to advanced.  Small class sizes, highly qualified instructors, a diverse student mix and a variety of learning methodologies to suit different learning styles are features of this course.  Students are taught in a full-time intensive course the elements of the English language including speaking, reading, writing and listening.

The classes are suitable for individuals who intend to study our diploma courses here at Hales, undergraduate or postgraduate study at university, or those that want to improve their English for use at work or for communication worldwide. Our English language courses are fully accredited under the National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) and weekly course intakes enable flexibility and convenience for the student.

TEACHING  METHODS

Classes are communicative task-based learning.  Students are initially assessed to determine which class level best suits them (Beginner & Elementary, Lower Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate & Advanced).  Each level follows a syllabus, covering the four language skills and integrating vocabulary and grammar.  Excursions are offered in the Australian English elective to expose students to a wide variety of educational experiences.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is ongoing throughout the course and is based on student participation and language proficiency in all four skill areas. Assessment for and of learning is undertaken on a continuous basis examining achievement of a range of language tasks across the four skills.  Assessment includes oral class presentations, group projects, research projects and practical tasks.  Specific assessment will be based on the elements of the English Language: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

CLASS TIMES

Classes are held Monday to Friday, 4 hours per day face to face.  Please note: Part-time study is not available to international students.

ENTRANCE  REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age.

CAREER  PROSPECTS

Students completing an ELICOS program will receive a certificate, which states in detail their English language proficiency.
